National, Statewide and Regional Labor Market Information - Estimating DOT Employment Numbers National, Statewide, and Regional labor market information is included in Job Browser Pro. Just click the Employment Numbers button and a window of data is shown, drawn from multiple resources, including the Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH), Current Population Survey (CPS) data, and Occupational Employment Survey (OES). ![]() When interpreting these OES group employment numbers, the challenge is to estimate how many might represent employment of a specific DOT occupation. For the last 20 years, typical estimation methods have assumed that all DOT occupations occur with equal frequency. This is a poor assumption, since many DOT occupations occur with very low frequency because they are isolated to only a few specific industries. SkillTRAN has pioneered a new, more reliable methodology for estimating DOT employment numbers using available government statistics. This new method combines the Occupational Density Values for specific relevant NAICS industries computed from OES Long Term Occupational Projections for the entire National OES group. Using its special proprietary cross reference files, SkillTRAN suggests the most appropriate NAICS industries in which employment at the DOT level is likely to be found. These industry suggestions greatly simplify the task of sifting through typically hundreds of NAICS industries that are reported for the entire OES group. Job Browser Pro shows only the relevant industries and how many other DOT occupations might also be found in this same OES group in each of the suggested industries. Job Browser Pro weights the Occupational Density Value for each industry suggested by the number of other likely DOT occupations. The weighted and unweighted Occupational Density Values are summed, then multiplied by the National, State, and Regional OES employment numbers to provide a more reliable estimate of the likely employment numbers at the DOT level. ![]() To see the other DOT occupations that are likely to be found in this NAICS industry for the OES group, just click the WT. hyperlink for an industry to see the likely related DOT occupations. Initially, Job Browser Pro assumes equal distribution across these DOT occupations, but you can adjust the distribution if you know the industry well. ![]() You can see all of the NAICS industries for the OES Group for which Occupational Density Values are available. Just click the "Show/Add More Related Industries for this OES Group" button. The industries shown are the same as found under Long Term Outlook, only they are arranged in NAICS code order rather than by frequency of employment. You can add more industries from this list. You can remove a suggested industry as well. ![]() Changes that you make to the SkillTRAN-suggested industries are remembered so that the next time that you visit this occupation, your custom changes are displayed. Periodically, during its optional internet updates, SkillTRAN will archive your changes on its servers in the event of your computer change or hardware failure. SkillTRAN will also study your changes in the context of changes suggested by other customers so that it can update its industry suggestions. These changes will be periodically shared back to the Job Browser Pro customer base as part of the optional Internet Update Service so that customers benefit from a process of continuous peer review. This should significantly enhance the defensibility of this methodology. |
